Jose left Mexico at a young age in order to escape poverty and seek new opportunities in the states. His experience crossing the border was laborous and traumatic. Once in the US he had to overcome the language barrier and learn to adjust to the culture. Today, Jose is the head of a construction buisness and a father to a family.
Lao Tan le was born in Vietnam, he served in the South Vietnamese army for almost 20 years. Later, he was sent to a government run re-education camp. He was put under surveillance for 3 years after his release. Lao was unable to get a job, so his wife had to support their family of 7 as a pottery trader. Eventually he applied to the United States' government ODP program. Four years later he arrived in the US with his wife and 2 youngest sons. He could not bring his older children because they had families of their own and were over 21. Ten years later he was able to sponsor the rest of his family and they now live in Minnesota.
Anja grew up in West Berlin during the time of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall.Her parents were resistance fighters against the Berlin wall and helped operate an organization that built tunnels underneath the wall. For this reason, Anjas mother was captured and Anja suffered many hardships. Anja met her husband and started a family, then they decided to immigrate to the states
Angelica moved to the states with her husband without knowing much English
Saying goodbye to her family back in mexico was especially difficult for Angelica because in her small hometwon everyone knew each other. When she arrived in the states the language barrier became incredibly problematic when she had a medical issue and she could not compehend was her doctor was trying to tell her. Now, she is taking english lessons so that instances such as those no longer occur.
